Nikon Coolpix P520 Ergonomics and Functionality
The camera has a typical design superzoom. It is bigger than compact cameras but smaller than DSLRs. The housing is made of plastic. Most of the housing has a matte surface, and most easily soiled locations have a glossy surface. On the right, there is a handle for easy grip rubberized handle cameras in places of contact with the fingers of the hand.
A large part of the camera takes the lens. It protrudes from the main body of 6 cm and has a diameter of 6 cm. When the camera on, the lens extends a couple of centimeters. The camera does not have the usual mode dial, which is in most DSLR cameras. Top placed power button On/Off. And then, on the handle of the shutter button, zoom lever around it. Also, next to the power button is placed the microphone.
If you press the shutter button halfway, the bottom of the display will reflect the shooting parameters: shutter speed and aperture. Behind are a shooting modes «SCENE» button and viewing photos button.
The camera has no manual aperture, shutter speed, and ISO settings; the most that you can out of it is the program's plot. In addition to automatic mode, you can select up to 20 scene programs and smart portrait mode and settings with exposure and color reproduction: the soft mode, sepia: black and white high contrast, high key, low key. There is image stabilization mode. Behind there are 4 buttons arranged in a circle: flash, exposure compensation, macro mode, self-timer mode. In the center of the circle, there is a button "OK." At the bottom is a menu button and a delete images button. Another is behind the TFT display. It does not rotate. The screen has a size of 3 inches and a resolution of 921,000 pixels. This is an excellent indicator. These displays are the latest DSLR Nikon cameras. The camera has a built-in flash, which can be activated if necessary; click on its left.
More to the left of the lens has a zoom lever, which for convenience duplicates the lever around the shutter release button. The camera has a thread for mounting on a tripod. The handle has 4 batteries and a memory card slot.
Nikon Coolpix L820 Optics
The camera is equipped with a non-replaceable 30x zoom Nikkor 30x Wide Optical Zoom ED VR 4.0-120mm 1:3.0-5.8 lens and a focal range 4,0-120 mm (22,5-675 mm equiv.)
Widest angle. Along the edges of the frame is visible perspective distortion.
The biggest zooming. In the previous picture, this fragment is marked with a red rectangle.
This range is sufficient to shoot any genre scenes. Fastest the lens is also good: f/3—f/5.8. At the short end of the good sharpness. At the long end of the focal range, sharpness worsens, but you can get good pictures on a sunny day.
The biggest zooming
100% crop of the previous frame
As you can see, the sharpness is good.
Another example of a minimum and maximum focal range of the zooming. Red rectangle isolated fragment of closest zooming. Pictures are perfect on the street in sunny weather, but in the room to get high-quality images more difficult. This is due to autofocus mistakes and long exposure, which is why the object often gets blurred. I recommend taking a few pictures of the same scene, and then choose which will best. Alas, it's only an amateur entry-level camera, and expect from it a high definition as in DSLR cameras is not necessary.
An example of the quality of indoor photography. Example without flash.
Crop 100% of the previous photo[
As can be seen, is not ideal sharpness; we received a small motion blur because of the long exposure. In any case, the camera is best than chip compact cameras because it allows you to shoot many pictures in a short time. So you can catch more good shots of the same scene.
Example shootings on Nikon Coolpix L820
Here are a few examples taken in different modes and conditions. Some of the photos can be seen as a work date function.
The camera gives good color; the colors are bright, vivid.
The wide-angle allows you to capture a lot of detail into the frame.
Lens copes well with backlighting. But sometimes you can get a flare.
Let us consider a few examples of portraits.
To avoid distortion of the face and body proportions because of the distortion, portraits better shoot in the middle of the long-range.
Examples are made in «Macro» mode.
Also, you can shoot a good macro.
This photoshoot in «Night Landscape» mode, without a tripod, handheld. The camera in this mode offers two options: with a tripod and without a tripod.
Video on Nikon Coolpix L820
The camera can shoot good videos. The maximum size of Full HD 1920x1080 px. In the PAL or NTSC at 25 and 30 frames per second, respectively. There is also a slow-motion mode, but at a lower resolution. To start recording, there is a red button at the top of the back. The camera is equipped with a stereo microphone and zooming way directional sound writing. This is an example video:
Summary Nikon Coolpix L820 - good budget superzoom. It primarily attracts a wide focal range that covers all shooting scenes virtually. Perfect for those who do not want to bother too much with the settings and get good photos for the home archive. However, if you want more features and are not afraid of multiple settings, it is best to look towards the camera's Series P, Nikon Coolpix P520 or Nikon Coolpix P530. It is a more advanced camera.
